Since its popularization in the 17th century, who published, sold, and purchased Japanese erotic art (shunga)? To what extent has the government attempted to censor and otherwise suppress sexually explicit imagery since that time, and what effect has the genre had upon modern and contemporary art throughout the world? Dr. Ishigami Aki, co-curator of the British Museum’s 2013 blockbuster exhibition Shunga: sex and pleasure in Japanese Art, uncovers intriguing information about the development and legacy of this genre.
