Some contemporary Japanese artists who currently live abroad find inspiration for their work in Japan’s sexual culture and the complex sexual politics of their multicultural lifestyles. Presented here are three such artists who currently reside in Hawaiʻi: Mayumi Oda (b. 1945), Yumiko Glover, and Masami Teraoka (b. 1936). Absent from their work is the carefree innocence that we find in the charming prints of Hishikawa Moronobu (1618–1694) and other pioneers of shunga. Instead, we are confronted with such pressing issues as sexually transmitted disease, sexual exploitation, and the role of prostitution in our society.
