Due to their immense popularity as well as their fragility, few articulated prints (shikake-e) from the 19th century have survived to the present day. Their unusual shape and small size caused them often to be separated from the woodblock print folios with which they were sold, making the identity of the artist and the date when they were produced difficult to discern.
