Utagawa Kunisada 歌川国貞 / Toyokuni III 三代歌川豊国 (1786–1865)
The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons
Japan, Edo period (1615–1868), 1825
Woodblock-printed book; ink and color on paper
Purchase, Richard Lane Collection, 2003
Though its title references The Illustrated Night Parade of a Hundred Demons (Gazu hyakki yagyō), the bestiary published in 1776 by Toriyama Sekien (1712–1788), when the imagery here is compared with that found in Tales of a Hundred Vaginas (Hyaku bobo gatari, c. 1772-1781), on display to the left, Kunisada’s debt to Katsukawa Shunshō (1726–1792) is undeniable.
