Lecture: "The Emergence of Early Modern Japanese Erotica"
By Stephen Salel
Though the development of any art genre is typically a gradual process that defies precise explanation, a discussion of the art-historical merits of Japanese shunga demands careful consideration of how and when the commercial production of this artwork began. Such an inquiry leads us to larger, more vexing questions about the philosophical tenets underlying the broader genre of ukiyo-e printmaking and the relationship between ukiyo-e and erotic art.
Stephen Salel is the Robert F. Lange Research Associate for Japanese Art at the Honolulu Museum of Art, and co-curator of the exhibition Arts of the Bedchamber: Japanese Shunga.
